Turnitin shows up in two colors on student dashboards: similarity and AI writing. They answer different questions. Treating them as one score is how people get surprised.
Similarity asks whether your text matches published sources or other papers. AI writing asks whether the prose looks statistically like output from a large language model. You can pass one and fail the other. You can also flag on AI despite low similarity if you paraphrased a ChatGPT draft.

Two reports, two questions

Turnitin does not publish full model details. Public briefings and independent testing point to the same signal family other detectors use:
Predictable word sequences. LLM text tends toward statistically likely phrasing. Human drafts, especially rough ones, are messier.
Uniform structure. Similar sentence length, repetitive transitions ("Furthermore," "Moreover"), and flat paragraph rhythm increase AI probability.
Over-smooth prose. Perfect grammar with no rough edges can read synthetic, especially next to your in-class writing.
Modified AI patterns. Turnitin markets detection on paraphrased and edited AI output, not just raw ChatGPT paste. Light synonym swaps are not a safety plan.

What scores mean (and what they do not)
There is no universal "safe" AI percentage. Policies vary by institution and instructor.
Rough guidance from student reports and campus IT briefings through 2025-2026:
- Low single digits to teens: Often no action if the rest of the submission looks consistent with your work.
- Mid range (roughly 20-40%): May prompt review, especially on high-stakes assignments.
- High scores: Expect questions about process, drafts, and sources.
False positives happen. Formal ESL writing and highly structured essays sometimes trigger AI flags on human work. A score is a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict by itself.
Similarity scores have a separate scale and separate rules. Low plagiarism does not imply low AI risk.
How to prepare before you upload
Think in layers. Style fixes come after substance.
1. Know your syllabus
Some courses allow AI for brainstorming but not sentences. Others require disclosure. Some ban it entirely. If disclosure is required, add it.
2. Fix facts and citations first

3. Write the frame yourself
Intro, conclusion, and any claim tied to your own experience should be in your words. Instructors weight openings heavily. Twenty minutes here changes how the whole essay reads.
4. Add details only you could supply
Class discussion, lab notes, a named case from the prompt, one moment of disagreement in your argument. Generic AI text dies on specifics.
5. Fix rhythm by hand, then humanize if needed
Scan for transition chains, parallel lists, and sentences that all start the same way. Read aloud. Target flagged spans, not the whole document on autopilot.
